Police arrested a 37-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly threatened violence during a shoplifting incident at the ACME supermarket in Mt. Airy.

Store security confronted the suspect around 3:50 p.m. as he attempted to steal $278 worth of merchandise from the 7010 Germantown Ave. location. According to store security, the man became hostile, shouting threats at customers and staff.

Police arrested a 37-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly threatened violence during a shoplifting incident at the ACME supermarket in Mt. Airy.

Store security confronted the suspect around 3:50 p.m. as he attempted to steal $278 worth of merchandise from the 7010 Germantown Ave. location. According to store security, the man became hostile, shouting threats at customers and staff.

"Customers are frantic because you never know if someone might have a gun," said Darryl Simmons, an ACME loss prevention officer. "If someone threatens to shoot up the store, that's when you contact authorities."

Multiple police units responded and apprehended the suspect outside the store. He continued shouting as officers placed him in a police van. No firearm was found, according to the police report.

The incident triggered a Citizen app alert warning of a potentially armed suspect. No injuries were reported.
