Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences has had an exceptional year filled with academic progress, innovative programs, and strong community engagement. Situated in the heart of Chestnut Hill, the school continues to serve as a pillar of excellence in the School District of Philadelphia, with exciting initiatives and collaborations that highlight its commitment to student success and neighborhood partnership.

One of the most significant milestones for Jenks this year is its journey toward becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The school submitted its application for authorization in December and hopes to achieve full IB status by the fall of 2025. This rigorous program will bring a global perspective to student learning, preparing them for success in an interconnected world. Simultaneously, Jenks has begun the process of becoming a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, further underscoring its commitment to academic achievement and institutional growth.

Jenks students have continued to excel in math, science, and reading, as evidenced by the school’s upward trajectory in these areas. This success is supported by a team of highly qualified teachers, paraprofessionals, and special education assistants, all of whom contribute to making Jenks one of the most sought-after schools in the district. Several educators have been recognized as distinguished and model teachers of excellence, reflecting the high standard of teaching at the school.

The school’s fully operational library is another point of pride. With the help of community volunteers, Jenks remains one of the few schools in the district with a functioning library, providing invaluable resources for student learning. Additionally, Jenks has been recognized for its historical significance, earning a place in the Historical Hall of Fame this year.

The school’s dedication to extracurricular and enrichment opportunities is evident in its robust after-school programs. Students participate in activities such as chess competitions, theatre, environmental studies, book clubs, debate club, cooking, and social skills development. Jenks also maintains a strong focus on STEAM education, with students engaging in hands-on activities every Friday, including 3D printing and a student-run podcast. The school celebrated National STEAM Day with a launch event featuring Brooklyn Foundry.

In the arts, Jenks’ partnership with Quintessence Theatre has brought professional directors and theatrical training for its upcoming musical performance. The Jenks Diamonds STEP team has also represented the school in prestigious events, including a performance at the 6abc Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Community engagement remains a cornerstone of Jenks’ success. Parent-led initiatives such as Jenks Moms on Mission, which supports families in need, and Jenks Dads on Duty, which promotes school safety and runs the Boys to Men after-school program, are integral to the school’s culture. Monthly service projects have focused on beautifying green spaces, with plans to create an outdoor classroom in the spring.

Jenks continues to work with long-standing partners, including Mindfulness through Movement, which promotes wellness among third-grade students, and Chestnut Hill Hospital, which collaborates on programs emphasizing nutrition and exercise. The Chestnut Hill Rotary Club remains closely involved, complimenting Jenks’ IB exhibition themes of service, while the school’s collaboration with the Woodmere Art Museum has provided opportunities for students to perform and showcase their talents.

The school’s commitment to equity and advocacy was evident during its MLK Day peace march, which highlighted the need for equitable school facilities and programming while supporting the Stenton Family Manor shelter. Additionally, Jenks has joined the Chestnut Hill Community Association in advocating for pedestrian safety in the neighborhood, ensuring a safer environment for students and residents alike.

As Jenks Academy looks to the future, its focus remains on fostering academic excellence, enriching student experiences, and strengthening community ties. This year has been a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision for the success of every student and the broader Chestnut Hill community.
