I was so happy and moved that you did a piece on Rod Serling (“Peeking into the past: My time with TV's 'angry young man,'” June 13!) I thought he was a creative genius and tried not to miss any of his Twilight Zone episodes.
How unintentionally fortuitous it was that you were able to interview him right before he died! It must have been a shock to you having described him as looking so fit when you met him.
I did not know he was Jewish and had such a devastating experience in World War II. My former father-in-law lived in Ithaca, New York, and was Serling’s dentist when Serling was there teaching classes.
He told me how much he looked forward to Rod Serling's visits, hearing his viewpoints and appreciating his earthiness and kindness.
I nodded my head in agreement when you mentioned that he had a moral and sometimes unpopular (meaning seeking truth to power) point of view.
It rings so true again today when views like his are deemed Communist, unpatriotic or whatever the heck you want to mis-label them. I think of what he was up against: censorship, not being able to expose lies, corporate fear of anything being aired that was controversial or uncomfortable.
We have taken more of a turn towards theses practices with making sure students are not privy to topics that might make them “uncomfortable,” that the conflating of anti-Semitism with abhorrence of Israel’s genocidal attacks is rampant, the McCarthy-like “hearings” through which our illustrious self-serving, grandstanding Republicans are verbally brutalizing college presidents and trying to make them cow tow.
